Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day

Do my kids know me or what?  Even though I was down and out, most of the day not feeling good, my kids still made it a great day for me!  I absolutely love gardening, and call it my therapy!  Here are some of the treasures that they bought me for my gardening addiction!

Lots of gardening tools and even some seeds!

I love this little poem on this picture. I should have shut off my flash though. I am still learning photography!

The little poem says:  “Grandma hold me a little longer, Rock me a little more.  Tell me another story….. (you’ve only told me four!)  Let me sleep on your shoulder.  I love your happy smile.  I’ll always love you Grandma, so stay with me a while. ”  Isn’t that great?

Of course some chocolate added into the deal!

All in all it was a great day!  I got to see almost all of my kiddos, minus one, but I got to talk to him too!  Thanks guys for a great day.  Family makes it the best.  What would mother’s day be without the kiddos?  Right?  🙂

Life Happens

Life Happens

You know when life  happens, you have all these plans and ideas, and life gets in the way!  It just happens!  There isn’t anything we can do about it except roll with the punches.  Right???

Hahaha! This is exactly how I feel most days!!!

Hahaha! This is exactly how I feel most days!!!

I have been trying to consolidate life a little bit, in the places that can be.  Combining all of my blogs and places that I write, into one place – this one!  Soon all of the other options will be no longer.  I will only have my Scratchin Along blog.  You can however follow me here, because if you will notice at the top of this page, I have the posts that were on the other blogs, and I will still talk about all of my oddities like: preparedness, life, being a grandma, and everything else in between.  It will just all be here!

Like the new look of my site??  I LOVE READING!  When I found this theme that represents chapters in a book, and flipping through the pages, I kind of fell in love with it!  I know, weird right?  I guess you can only appreciate it if you are a book lover too.

So, just what has been getting in the way of life for me?  Well, life!  I always have great intentions to just kick back, read, write a bit, relax, and that just never seems to happen.  But once again life is intervening, and perhaps I will get more of that chance.  Health just might be forcing me to do a bit more of that relaxing.  We shall see.  Have a couple of doc appointments over the next little bit, they will be the deciding factor on how much I allow life to get in my way anymore.

What do you do when life gets in the way of what  you really want to do?  Is there a right or wrong answer?  Sometimes I just want to

I have always loved this quote. Quit making other plans? Nope! Then we just die.

I have always loved this quote. Quit making other plans? Nope! Then we just die.

forget life and do what I want to do, but then my conscience kicks in and I don’t.  I love the quote that I heard on a John Lennon song, “Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.”  I have lots of plans, and then real life happens!  🙂

Oh well, keep posted as I have finally gotten these blogs all merged together and found the template that I love, now I can just get busy doing the writing that I want to do!

Strangers In The Box

Come; look with me inside this drawer
In this box I’ve often seen,
At the pictures, black and white
Faces proud, still, serene.
I wish I knew these people,

Grandma, Grandad, Dad Lila, Dory

These strangers in the box.
Their names and all their memories
Are lost among my socks.
I wonder what their lives were like.
How did they spend their days?
What about their special times?
I’ll never know their ways.
If only someone had taken time
To tell who, what, where, and when;
These faces of my heritage
Would come to life again.

Grandma 16 and Emma
Could this become the fate
Of the pictures we take today?
The faces and the memories
Someday will pass away.
Make time to save your stories!
Seize opportunity when it knocks!
Or someday you and yours could be
The strangers in this box.

Things To Say To Help Someone Through An Anxiety Attack

This is a great article on helping someone get through an anxiety attack. Worth reposting.

My Good Time Stories

Anxiety. Every person in the world has it and has to deal with it on a daily basis. Whether it is big or small, everyone has something that they worry about or are fearful of. There are different kinds of anxiety…there is good anxiety (such as an athlete getting ready to play in a game) or bad, chronic anxiety (worrying about things that a person had no control over or can’t do anything about). Bad anxiety or stress can become very detrimental and harmful to a person if it raises to unhealthy levels.

I recently read an article written by Jacklyn Krol on “Thought Catalog” that I thought would be good to share with you. Since I have dealt with anxiety attacks and raised anxiety levels in the past, articles like this have really helped me deal with my stress levels in more effective ways. The thing that has helped…

Gardening With The Future In Mind

Last year I really started thinking different about gardening.  Normally my gardens would include what fresh vegetables we might want through the summer months, and what produce I could grow to preserve and use for the winter.  I have always been blessed with great family and friends who have very large gardens / farms who have let me work for produce and such.  My dad has always had a large market garden / berry farm, but when he decided to sell out soon, I started to realize that I have wasted many of my years here, by not starting sooner to build up my own little yard into my own little survival garden.

Last year I planted cherry trees, Saskatoon bushes, raspberry bushes, some strawberry plants and currant bushes. We already have a really great set up of grape vines which

provide all the juice and jelly that we could use in a season.  However if I had planted these 12 years ago when we moved into this home, I would have a really great little berry farm on my corner lot in the city.  Now I have to wait for a few years to really see the benefits of planting these.

I have also planted a few herbs that are perennials. Some of these are herbs that we use on a daily basis, so planting them will help us long term to become more self reliant.  Some herbs are annuals where I live, so they need to be planted each year.

A couple of years ago we built four raised beds, that have proven to be prolific in pretty

much whatever I plant in them.  I love them!  They are so easy to weed and water, easy to plant, and easy to harvest the produce.  I have tried to used the square foot method of gardening in them a bit, and it seems to work great.  We have also built some metal sides to the raised beds, that way we can wrap them in plastic to make little 4 by 4 green houses.  It works like a charm.

Okay, so I have some perennial herbs planted, and lots of berry bushes and trees planted, but what other things can I get growing and how can I make better use of my yard to make my family more self reliant?

Probably one of the first things that you can do when planting a garden, is to try and buy garden seeds that are called “Heirloom” seeds.  These can grow produce for this year, and if you save the seeds, you can use them to grow produce next year and from year to year. The seeds that

are called hybrid seeds, are genetically modified to produce a great, heavy yielding crop for the one year, and then you have to purchase seeds again for the next year.  They will not produce fruit from planting the seed the second year.  You can use a mixture of seeds in your garden, depending on what you want, but just make sure you keep notes on which seeds are which, that way you can save useful seeds, and not waste time on others.

It would be wise also to learn which native weeds are actually herbs and food.  Many of these most obnoxious weeds we have, could sustain life, and actually help heal many of our minor complaints.  Weeds like dandelion, plantain, burdock, mullein, and portulaca can be

really noxious weeds, but are all really healthy for us to eat, and have some amazing healing properties.  These can be a great resource for our survival gardening, just learning where to find them and what to do with them.

Some good vegetables to plant would include: green or yellow beans, corn (if you have the space), tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, cucumbers and squash (if you have the space).  Some of these take up quite a bit of space, so you can either get the kinds that climb, or find another garden space that you can let them spread.  You can learn to plant climbers with stalk plants, like beans or peas with corn, and then plant squash around the base to fill in.

You can plant things in pots too.  There are many years that I have not had enough garden space, so I grow things in pots.  Peppers, tomatoes, beans, carrots, and even zucchini can grow in pots.  Do a little bit of research because with careful attention, you can do all of your gardening in pots, if you are motivated enough.

No this isn't my yard, but maybe someday it will look this good! Notice a few pots in amongst the planted ones.

This year, I am going to make a couple of more raised beds.  I am running out of room in my yard, so I may have to use up some of my lawn and turn it into garden space.  We can each do little things each year, that can have a huge benefit for the future years.  One day, one year at a time, we can become a little bit more self sufficient.

Well, my week off has come and gone, and of course I was so busy that I never really got to do all of the writing that I would have loved to do.  I did however get to spend much time with my friends.  I am blessed with a lot of friends.

I have friends that I call family. Some people don’t count family as friends, and some people don’t have family to count as friends.  I

My crazy family!

have actually come across both of these situations this week.  I have also found that some people have family, but they can’t count them as friends.  How sad is this?  I have a dear friend that confided in me that she is breaking inside because she has certain religious beliefs, and her family doesn’t support her in these beliefs.   Not only do they not support her but they have pretty much cut her out of their world and strongly criticize her religion.  Really?  Not okay!  I always thought we lived in a world where people could believe what they choose and we could still love them regardless.  But no – those we love the most, can also hurt us the most.  I am blessed with great family, whom I call friends, and we are strong and close.

I have friends that are people I am getting to know.  People that I have met through church, work or doing service.  It never ceases to amaze me at the friends that will come into our lives by serving people.  There is never a shortage of people to serve and people

who need loving.  I had many opportunities this week to be with these friends too.

I have friends that have truly become my dear close friends.  I was fortunate to spend some time with these friends this week too.  I had a close friend who I haven’t seen for awhile, turn 50!  I was able to surprise her at her party!  I love those reunions where you just want to hug and smile and visit.   They are sweet times that really make you reminisce and appreciate the time that you have put into being a good friend for years and years.  Thanks Sheila!  I also got to help another good friend with a crazy project that we often do together – make a meal and feed 200.  It is hard work and we are always exhausted when the evening is over, but we have

Good thing we aren't real drinkers! Good times!

some great times and make some forever memories at these times.  Thanks Jayne!  These moments always make me think back many years and reflect on the dear friends I have made.  They are precious.  We shouldn’t ever take these friendships for granted.  I think in the Heavens we will be neighbors and best friends!

I have friends that are acquaintances, like my neighbors and co workers.  I didn’t get to spend much time with these ones this week, but they are also a big part of our world.  What kind of life would we lead if we didn’t even know our neighbors or our co workers?  That is such a big part of our world, that I think it would be sad not to make friends with these kind of people.

I have friends that I have met via my blogging, and from my hobbies of writing, preparedness, herbal medicine, and others.  I love these friends.  It is really cool to have friends who have the same interests as me!  Not all of our friends love the same things.  Many of my friends don’t get why I like to blog, but my blogger friends do!  Many of my friends don’t get why I like weeds, but my herbal friends do.  And many of my friends don’t get why I love preparedness, but my prepping friends do!

I have friends who are from every walk of life, and the one thing that we all have in common, no matter who we are, we need good friends who we can count on. I love all of my friends no matter how weird or crazy we might be!

So what did I do this week which took me away from writing so much – which I love to do?  It was a variety of my friends and family, who are some of my closest friends, and that is okay.  I wouldn’t change it.  My to do list is still there, and unfortunately will never go away, but that is okay too.  I have many friends!

Where Do The Days Go?

Where Do The Days Go?

Last week, I was so excited because I had this whole next week off work!  Now this week, all I can keep saying to myself is, “Where did the days go?”.  The week is half over and I haven’t got done nearly all the things that I wanted to. My to do list is still pretty long.  I am slowly checking it off, but man oh man, life just seems to be crazy.  Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but it is crazy!

I always thought that as my kids grew up and mostly went away, that I would find more time.  No so!  I am just finding that if I want more time, I have to take it late at night or in the wee hours of the morning, when everyone else is still sleeping.  It would be nice if there were just a few more hours in the day!  This book that I have gives some really great suggestions on how to find more time, and the things that we can free up to do this.

I know that many people wonder how I find the time to maintain blogs.  Some people think that it is a waste of time. For me however, it is much more than a waste of time.  I make the time to blog for a few reasons.

1.  I really love writing and expressing my opinions. I guess in a way it is kind of like a journal for me.  Not necessarily of what I do each day, but my thoughts, feelings, and so forth.  It is kind of a way for me to release! Not only do I blog, but I have written four books, in tThe FLGhe past year and am working on a few others that will be hopefully done by summer’s end.

2. I love to research new things and write about them, because that is the way I learn the best, and I love learning. It helps me to always keep my mind alert and going.  I don’t want to ever let my mind die, and they say that if you read or write a lot, it helps to prevent Alzheimer problems as you get older. But mostly because I love learning and if I don’t know something, what better way to learn than to do a little research and either teach about it or write about it.

3. I make a little bit of money doing it, and hope to some day make enough money that writing can be my only source of income.  It takes a whack of set up work, background work, and building up of your on line presence in order to create enough traffic flow to make any money by blogging.  I have been working on setting this all up for quite some time now, and as I have been doing it, I have been researching the best ways, reading tons of books from the library, reading online, and checking out blogs and sites and so forth, that make money online.  There are quite a few different ways to make money online by blogging, and since I love it, I figure I might as well make a little money doing it, if I can.  It takes work, but I have never been afraid of work.

4.  I am doing some freelance work online too, and by always writing and keep in the loop, I keep traffic flowing to my sites, and I keep aware of things happening out there in cyberspace.  This always helps me when I am writing freelance articles.  I am finding this to be pretty cool.  I never have to leave my house to work again!  Well, not quite yet, but that is my hope, to be able to be working just from home and my trusty little computer here.

5. Writing on my blogs offers me an escape, so to speak, from my own challenges and reality.  Some days I just want to forget about my “to do” lists, forget about what is going on, and I find myself in a little corner chair just writing.  It is helps to ease my troubled soul, on the days that it needs easing. I think we all have those days, and we all have our outlets.

6. I can write whatever I want, and

I just like this picture because I love lady bugs and I love reading.

I just like this picture because I love lady bugs and I love reading.

it is okay.  That is the cool thing about writing on blogs, they can be whatever you want them to be.  I have seen blogs on pretty much every topic you can imagine.  Some I don’t even want to know are out there, but I don’t look at those kinds.  There are blogs about babies, family, music, art, feelings, anxiety, depression, religion, your life, journals, news, travel, blogging, writing books, raising animals, cooking and more cooking, preparedness, crafts, school, home school, and on and on.  There is a never ending list of what people are blogging about.  It is your baby – you can write and say whatever you want!

7. It is a free hobby / addiction.  If you need a hobby but really can’t afford what you like, try blogging.  I first started blogging with and it is so easy to set up a blog.  Within a few minutes you can be up and running and writing away.  I still have my blogs with them up, but I have transferred to wordpress now, and my blogger blogs will eventually go away.  Which do I like best?  Blogger is easier and way more user friendly, if you are just starting out.  And I actually think for basic blogging, blogger is easier to add extra things to your blog for free.  WordPress has more blog templates to choose from, some are free, some are not, but they are all pretty limited as to what you can do unless you want to pay a little bit extra and host your own blog and buy a premium template that you can adjust more to make it what you want.  So it really depends on how computer savvy you are and if you want to spend any money, or just want to do it free.  If you want to have a cheap hobby, then go with blogger and set it up.  If you want to earn a little money and make a business out of it, then perhaps wordpress is the way to go.  Both are great options.

So there you have it in a nutshell, why I spend time every day writing.  I love it!  Yuppers, it takes up some of my time, but I find that if I don’t do things that I love to do, life would be way to stressful, and not fun. Blogging isn’t for everyone, but it is for me!
